An event focused on Indigenous stewardship, knowledge sharing and community building for the future of Galgahl’yáan abalone in Haida Gwaii on September 17 and 18, 2024. This two-day meeting, co-hosted by the Council of Haida Nation, Gwaii Haanas/Parks Canada, and the University of California Berkeley and supported by the Pew Charitable Trusts, is focused on bringing together knowledge holders from First Nations, communities. universities, government agencies, and NGOs to share knowledge and perspectives about Galgahl’yáan abalone. We aim to host Galgahl’yáan abalone and community knowledge holders from around the west coast of Canada, the US West Coast, and across the global seas who will share food, social gatherings, and public talks as part of the abalone summit.

The meeting will be hosted at the iconic Haida Heritage Centre at Ḵay Llnagaay in Skidegate, Haida Gwaii. A central goal of the meeting will be to facilitate expansion of Indigenous, community and scientific knowledge networks to support the Indigenous stewardship of abalone across the Northeast Pacific and southern hemisphere
